29. The Room Where it Happens

 29. The Room Where it Happens

If you know me a little, you may know that I’m a huge musical theater fan. Les Misérables will always be so dear to my heart, but I have a new favorite, and it might be yours, too! Hamilton, of course! (Maybe I have a thing for the revolutionary time period??)

I often find myself quoting a line here and there, “Everything’s legal in New Jersey” and I definitely find the songs running through my mind unbidden.  “Satisfied” is particularly sticky!

Another song that I love is called, “The Room Where it Happens.” Essentially, one person is kept from being in the room where it happens, while others are given access, and therefore the power to help make decisions.

Because of COVID-19, many of us have been kept out of our own personal “rooms” due to sickness, quarantining,or contact tracing. I’ve seen many responses to this issue during 2020. Some try to move the room and make it work wherever they may be. Some rail against the barred access, but have no recourse. Others accept the temporary nature of the denied entry and turn to other pursuits of the mind during the interim.

I’m guessing every person can relate to being kept out of the room where it happens on some level. From wishing to be moved from the kids’ table to the adults’ table at Thanksgiving, the desire to be part of high level discussions in your industry, or to even more more important and basic rooms that were barred to some members of our nation during the Civil Rights movement, the feeling is one of isolation, frustration, and helplessness. You KNOW you can contribute, but your input is not sought or desired.

What I’m about to share with you can’t guarantee you access to any of the rooms you desire to enter. In fact, in some circles the door might not only but shut to you, someone may lock it! In the gospel of Matthew in Chapter 7, Jesus tells the people gathered to hear the sermon on the mount that they should keep asking, seeking and knocking.  (7.“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.). Of course, Jesus isn’t talking about getting into rooms to “learn the art of the trade or how the sausage gets made”. He is talking about praying to our Heavenly Father and His desire to answer our prayers and give us good gifts.

I urge all of us to knock on His door. He always gives us access to Himself. His is the ultimate room where it happens, and He tells us to knock.
